Discover Desert Ink Press

Desert Ink Press, a project of Books for Classrooms, is led
by consultant, Husi Cázares (enrolled Tohono O’odham). Co-author and
illustrator of the first seven bilingual Tohono O’odham children’s books to be
published by spring 2026.

Studies show that the biggest barrier to literacy in the
United States is lack of access to books. Students who see themselves in high
quality, relevant books read more and gain in literacy skills. Our goal is that
every child sees themselves in the books they read.

  • We’re honored to share that Lessons with Hu'ul Ke:li has won an award from the Independent Book Publishers Association in the First Nations/Indigenous Communities category. This recognition celebrates the importance of Indigenous storytelling, education, and cultural connection, and we are proud to help bring these voices and lessons to readers everywhere.
